The honours were shared at a wet and windy St Marys this afternoon.
For the trip to St Marys, to take on Southampton, Sam Allardyce made just the one change from the team that had lost to Stoke City last time out, with Ravel Morrison, making his first Premier League start, coming in for Stewart Downing. Mladen Petric, signed in midweek, wasn`t considered ready for a place in the eighteen named for the game.
With regards to the inclusion of Morrison, Sam had this to say,
'Hopefully Ravel Morrison will go out and show what he can do. He played exceptionally well when we played Espanyol a week last Thursday. Against good opposition he is capable, but whether he is capable against Premier League opposition... we'll wait and see.'
At a soggy, windswept St Marys it was Southampton who got the first half underway. The first decent cross of the game saw Demel just fail to find Nolan and when the ball was worked in again Diame forced a save out of the Southampton keeper Boruc.
Soon after a Jarvis corner drifted across the face of the goal as West Ham continued their good start. Nolan won possession in the middle of the park and fed Jarvis but his cross was claimed, under the bar, by Boruc. Southampton, breaking down our right flank saw Osvaldo presented with a chance eight yards out but Jaaskelainen got a block on it and it was deflected up and over the bar.
As Southampton pushed forward Shaw got in behind Diame but the cross in was cleared from within a crowded six yard box. Pushing forward, a cross from Demel was far too deep evading Jarvis at the back post much to the consternation of Sam Allardyce. Diame tried his luck from forty yards out but it flew wide.
A mistake from Collins allowed Osvaldo to get clear but Jaaskelainen was on hand to make a save from Lambert after Reid`s poor clearance had given the England striker a chance. As West Ham countered, Jarvis earned a corner it was headed clear by the home defence. Diame received the first yellow card of the game for a cynical trip on Lallana.
West Ham thought they`d taken the lead when Jarvis skipped through only for Boric to clear then watch as Nolan swept the ball home from 30 yards out. Unfortunately the offside flag had gone up when Jarvis burst through.
Demel fouled Lambert on the edge of the area, out wide, but Lallana`s free kick was headed tamely over. Morrison, as West Ham pushed forward after Wanyama had been dispossessed, saw his screamer just clear the bar. Collins, covering, conceded a corner as Wanyama broke into the area with the corner, subsequently being cleared.
In stoppage time in the half both Nolan and Maiga had half chances but neither could get the ball under control.
Half Time - Southampton 0 West Ham 0
West Ham were first out for the second half and kept waiting by Southampton. West Ham restarted the half attacking the end their supporters were camped in. Wanyama had the first decent chance of the half, firing one in from 30 yards that Jaaskelainen tipped over. From the resulting corner Lambert powered a header against the post.
As the rain poured down Southampton were getting a foothold in the game and Jaaskelainen had to rush out to thwart Lallan as Osvaldo played a nice through ball into his path. As for going forward, Wes Ham were looking pretty poor and struggling to trouble Southampton. Osvaldo saw a shot blocked by Collins and the Reid headed another Southampton shot over the bar.
West Ham were forced into a change with Demel going off and Rat coming on. Lallana won another corner for our hosts but the delivery was far too deep and the danger passed. Noble became the second Hammer to be booked, for a late challenge. Reid produced a great challenge after a cross to the back post had been hooked back into the six yard box.
Jaaskelainen then produced wonderful stop to deny Schneiderlen as Southampton upped the pressure. Allardyce made a change with Maiga going off and Vaz Te coming on. Joey O`Brien then committed a reckless challenge on Lallana, causing a melee, the result being a third yellow card for a Hammer. Jaaskelainen then produced another fine save as Lambert tried to curl one into the far corner. With just over fifteen minutes to go Matt Taylor came on to replace Morrison. Southampton were still in the ascendency though and a free-kick from Ward-Prowse drifted along the back-line with nobody getting a touch.
A rare spell of West Ham pressure saw Vaz Te win a corner but Southampton cleared it, the ball got worked back in and after a scramble in the area the ball fell to Collins but the centre back leaned back and fired well over the cross bar.
Reid looked to pick up a knock and with the centre-back on the touchline being treated West Ham were, temporarily, down to 10 men. Southampton, pushing for a late winner, forced a corner through Lambert which Collins turned behind for another corner, this one being clawed away by Jaaskelainen.
Four minutes of added time were announced and during those four minutes West Ham forced two corners but neither came to anything. As stoppage time began to run out Wanyama drove a shot wide.
