If only, if only!
If only we`d not have conceded early then last night may have been a completely different ball game.
In a way you sort of knew that with Manchester United falling behind in so many games we`d be the exception to the rule, but what we probably didn`t realise that before our backsides had sat in the seats in the away corner of the ground, we`d be a goal down.
Successful away ventures are often built upon a plan of keeping the home support quiet, of keeping things tight and not falling behind to an early goal. They`re not based on conceding the fastest goal in the Premier League this season.
But that is exactly what happened.
With a mere 32 seconds on the clock before Robin Van Persie collected a pass from Michael Carrick to see his slightly deflected shot nestle in the net. Thoughts of a possible hammering were racing through my mind as I looked towards the heavens.
Thankfully, it didn`t turn out like that, sure Manchester United had their chances, but the Hammers held firm and frustrated United. As it turned out we could well have snatched an equaliser when Andy Carroll showed exquisite skill to control but his shot cleared the bar.
Driving home, down the motorway, it was hard not to contemplate the fact that we`ve slipped down the table and have lost two on the bounce but a smile soon returned to my face when I realised that we face Chelsea this Saturday, a club we have little time for and a club that hasn`t won a Premier League fixture in the last six attempts.
Come on you Irons!
