Wigan 2 West Ham 1

The Hammers crash to a defeat at the DW Stadium.

Sam Allardyce selected exactly the same starting eleven that trounced Southampton last weekend.

The Irons got off to a poor start when Wigan, having won a corner, taken by Beausejour, saw their defender Ramis volley home with only seven minutes played.

West Ham`s response saw Diame win a free kick, conceded by Ramis, but Noble`s free kick slammed into the wall.

Jaaskelainen kept the deficit at one goal by producing a decent save to deny McCarthy. Carroll as Wigan pushed, produced a smart block to deny Beausejour when the shot looked to be goal bound.

The Hammers, through Jarvis, tried to get back into the game but the Wigan defence held firm, Al Habsi saving as Benayoun almost got a final touch to the ball.

West Ham were doing better now and Collins was the next to fail to score after his initial control had the traveling faithful believing he was about to burst the net but, in the end, his weak shot was saved by Al Habsi.

As half time approached, Jaaskelainen did well to thwart Franco di Santo as Wigan looked to double their lead.

Half Time - Wigan 1 West Ham 0

Sam made a change at half-time, introducing Modibo Maiga in place of Benayoun but the Hammers were soon to fall 2-0 behind when James MacArthur gave Jaaskelainen no chance with a shot, from the edge of the area, after a build-up that saw Beausejour, Di Santo and Maloney involved. Unfortunately the goal was of our own making with Jaaskelainen`s poor clearance giving Wigan the chance to pour down our flank.

Carroll then missed a great opportunity to reduce the arrears when he tried to control a pass instead of hitting it first time. Time was running out for West Ham and Sam Allardyce made another change by bringing on Carlton Cole.

Late on West Ham could have reduced the arrears but Tomkins failed to net from six yards out hitting the bar instead.

Tomkins did partially redeem himself late on though by scoring a consolation goal.

Not the best of days out, I`d say!
