And there was I, in my short but sweet match preview, harping on about the Capital One Cup being one of only two trophies that we had a chance of winning this season.
Well perhaps somebody should have told the players!
Last night, in front of a bumper crowd of 25,934, West Ham produced a shocking performance and were thrashed 4-1 by a Wigan side that had made full use of its squad.
The evening started well with West Ham taking the lead. Only seven minutes had been played before a poor pass form McArthur opened the door for Maiga to score a fine goal with a powerful shot.
But the lead was to last a mere seven minutes with Wigan`s Argentine striker Boselli turning home a cross from Figueroa`s cross. Matters got worse in the 38th minute when the Hammers fell behind to a corking goal. Ramis collected the ball some distance out before unleashing a shot that beat Henderson with ease.
If Big Sam was hoping to get to the break to change things around without conceding another goal he was to be disappointed. Four minutes before the break Boselli got his second of the evening dinking a shot over Henderson.
West Ham looked a little more organized in the second half but couldn`t get that breakthrough that would have made things interesting. Instead salt was rubbed into our wounds when Wigan scored a fourth.
It came after Henderson brought down McArthur in the area and Gomez stepped up to deliver that final Hammer blow for the evening.
One cup down, one more cup to go!
